Children begin to learn as soon as they are
born. During the early years, learning continues at a phenomenal pace
as old concepts are added to, combined with or replaced by new ones.
Adults have the opportunity and the obligation to help children become
active participants in lifelong learning. They can do this by providing
an environment that supports all aspects of children's development.
Young children need learning experiences that are appropriate to their
age, abilities, needs and interests, and that respect the social and
cultural contexts of their lives.
Using the latest national research in various content areas, the
Indiana Department of Education identified the foundations for English/language
arts, math, science, social studies, physical education, health,
art, and music. These foundations form the base upon which future
learning is constructed and they have been published in a document
called Foundations for Young Children to the Indiana Academic
Standards. (To view this document, please visit the Indiana
Department of Education website.)
The Child Care Collection includes two videos that illustrate
some of the ideas found in the Foundations document. (Clips from
these videos can be viewed on this website by visiting the Content
Areas that are listed above and to the right.)
